Cocktails in the clouds

The best rooftop bars in Munich to sip a cocktail, have a chat or simply party at.

The rooftop terrace of the restaurant The Grill offers 100 seats.

When summer heats up in Munich, there is hardly anything more amazing than sitting in a shadowy beer garden with your friends and enjoying life with a snack and a glass stein of good German beer or two. However, there are alternatives galore in Munich, especially for those who think that there are occasions when ale-benches and beer mugs don’t quite cut it. Hot tip: visit one of the many spectacular rooftop bars that are scattered all across the city and enjoy your drink with a gorgeous view surrounding you.

China Moon Roof Terrace at Mandarin Oriental

China Moon Roof Terrace at the swish 5-star-house Mandarin Oriental is Munich’s best kept secret for delicious dishes, a terrific rooftop pool and of course a breath-taking panoramic view of the city. Get a taste of high life while you sip your cocktail in the clouds and indulge in Asian, Mediterranean or Arabic delicacies. Oriental statues and various foliage plants ooze a distinctive Asian flair on the terrace. Make sure you try the home-made Arabic mezze, hummus, baba ghanoush and tabouleh – they’re to die for! You can have a chat in one of the comfortable cane chairs and big sofas with orange cushions or just watch the sun set over the sprawling metropolis with the twin domes of Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) in the background and the Alps on the horizon.

There is no doubt that Hotel Bayerischer Hof is one of the hottest addresses in Munich. The Blue Spa Bar, that is directly located over the Blue Spa, lures with an opulent outdoor area. From there, you can see the Munich centre and Frauendom – an unbeatable view, no matter if it’s day or night. Highly recommended: the exclusive Blue Spa barbecue that is offered daily from June to September. Crispy, summer-fresh salads, light Mediterranean grilled fish and meat meals, and nonstandard summer cocktails will make your stay at this destination an unforgettable experience. Emiko Roof Terrace at Hotel Louis

Hotel Louis gives you a rare glimpse into an especially quiet rooftop hideaway. After a short registration at the reception, take the lift to the sixth floor where a narrow corridor will lead you straight to Munich’s probably cutest rooftop terrace. This smartened up hot spot is not only worth a visit because of its lonesome atmosphere. The Asian inspired cocktail creations at Emiko Bar attract cocktail aficionados from everywhere in Munich. The drinks are mixed with plum wine, saké, lemon grass, ginger and Thai basil. The new lunch offer called Sushi & Sunshine will also fill tables during summer. From 6 p.m. in the evening, guests can dine a la carte (make sure you have a reservation!). Butter-soft fillet of Wagyu Beef, fine sushi platters or the chef’s summer suggestion, aji tartare with grapefruit and turnip carpaccio, are just a few dishes from the multifaceted menu. The special thing about the food: all dishes are served in the middle of the table and are then enjoyed by the “sharing priniciple” – where everyone is able to try everything. This way of dining arranges for a unique, communicative eating experience.

Café Glockenspiel at Marienplatz is one of the classics among the rooftop bars in Munich. The outdoor area is daily open from 10.00 a.m. which is really the perfect time to scoff a yummy breakfast in a front-row seat to St Peter’s Church. The café is worth a visit in the evening, too. The fizzy chef’s suggestion which is ideal for hot summer nights: Sloe Gin Silver Fizz with sloe gin, lemon, sugar, egg white and soda. The wine list is also not to be sneezed at.
