Breakfast in Munich

Rise and shine: Munich offers many fantastic breakfast cafés – even for early risers.

Backspielhaus

If a unique breakfast experience at an early hour is high on your wishlist, you can’t go far wrong with a visit to Backspielhaus: The bakery’s operators show a lot of effort and expert knowledge in choosing fine ham and cheese specialties, sweet marmalades and other breakfast ingredients. Especially worthy of praise: Some of the products come from selected small homesteads that set value on the naturalness of the production and adequate animal housing. The fact that the bakery chain shops are spread all over the city is another big plus.

Café Münchner Freiheit

Whether you are an early riser or a night owl – your stomach will start rumbling at a certain point in the morning. A beautiful place to soothe it has been located for 45 years at Münchner Freiheit. At Café Münchner Freiheit, everyone will find what he/she loves for breakfast: a rich “Wolkenlos and Endlos”-breakfast with Prosecco, prawns, salmon, scrambled eggs and fine cheese or just a small traditional Munich snack like fresh “Weißwürste” (Bavarian veal sausages) or “Strammer Max” (brown bread with ham and fried eggs) – the menu offers a great selection of dishes. And as Munich people are proud to live in Italy’s most Northern city, they love to take their breakfast outside on the huge café terrace - even when the temperatures are less Mediterranean. All snug and cosy in warm blankets, you can enjoy the first meal of the day quite early in the morning.

Address: Münchner Freiheit 20, 80802 München / Website: www.muenchner-freiheit.de / Opening times: In summer: Mo - So 06.30 a.m. – 10.00 p.m., in winter: Mo - So 06.30 a.m – 08.00 p.m.

Café Frischhut

To locals, Café Frischhut is simply known as “Schmalznudel”. Some years ago, night owls, party and market people were catered with the greasy pastry of the same name and strong coffee at the legendary venue, starting already at five o’clock in the morning. Now, “Schmalznudel” opens its doors at seven o’clock but is, nevertheless, still very popular. When the majority of Munich residents still lie in bed, flavoursome “Rohrnudeln” (Bavarian hot cross buns filled with jam) are taken from the oven and hand-made, doughnut-style pastries called “Schmalznudel” are put into hot grease. You can be sure that the first clients won`t remain hungry for long at this venue. Many visitors even can’t wait to sit down at the rustic wood tables and start the day relaxed with sweet pastry, so they already line up for breakfast in front of the doors at seven o’clock.Address: Prälat-Zistl-Str. 8, 80331 Munich / opening times: Mo - Sa 07.00 a.m. – 06.00 p.m.

Café Zimt

Café Zimt is a successful fusion of a coffee house, a bakery and a small restaurant. The first early risers already start their day with a well-balanced breakfast at seven o’ clock in the morning. They can choose from a fine selection of mueslis, egg specialties, Panini, Tramezzini and co. At the weekend, the menu is extended by some other goodies, e.g. pancakes with fruit. Still not stuffed from breakfast? Try some delicious tarts or cakes – a divine start to a perfect day!
